From Field to Market: How Agro-Processing Adds Value and Puts More Money in Members’ Pockets

In farming, the greatest leap in profitability often occurs after the harvest. The Obalagbe Unity Multipurpose Association is focusing heavily on Agro-processing and Value Addition  to ensure our members capture more profit from their hard work.

The Value-Addition Gap

When a farmer sells raw produce (like cassava tubers), they are selling the commodity at its lowest price point. All the subsequent profit—from peeling, processing, packaging, and marketing—is captured by middlemen or external processors.

Our strategy is to bridge this gap and keep that added value within our community.

Cooperative Processing: A Game Changer

By focusing on our core objective to promote agro-processing, we are investing in shared resources that benefit everyone:

1. Reducing Waste: Cassava, plantain, and vegetables are highly perishable. By setting up shared mini-processing centers (e.g., for garri, flour, or palm oil extraction), we can process produce immediately after harvest, eliminating significant post-harvest losses. This saves money and labor.

2. Higher Prices: Processed goods command higher prices than raw materials. For example, selling packaged, branded cassava flour brings in significantly more revenue than selling raw cassava roots. This is a direct boost to members’ income.

3. New Employment Opportunities: The processing centers themselves create new roles for youth and women in operating machinery, packaging, and quality control, supporting our objective of empowerment.

Our commitment to value addition is central to our mission of shared prosperity. By transforming our raw harvests into finished products right here in Obalagbe, we are not just farming for today; we are building a sustainable, long-lasting agricultural economy for the future.
